Who doesn’t love pizza? It’s a classic, beloved comfort food that has delighted generations. There’s no denying it: pizza is the King of Comfort Food. But, have you ever wondered what the origin of pizza is? Let’s learn a bit about the fascinating history of pizza!

Flatbreads with toppings were consumed by the ancient Egyptians, Romans and Greeks. But the modern birthplace of pizza is southwestern Italy's Campania region, home to the city of Naples, in the 10th century. In 1905, America’s first pizzeria was opened in New York, named Lombardi’s. Since then, dozens of chain stores have emerged and nowadays pizza is one of the most popular foods in America. In fact, 3 billion pizzas are sold in America each year. It's hard to imagine that before World War II, pizza was little known outside of Italy or Italian immigrant communities! National Pizza Day was first celebrated in about 2000, but it is not clear who started it.

Now the question is, what’s the perfect drink to pair with it? Because the thing that separates the experience of enjoying pizza is the drinks that we choose. These are some Wine & Pizza Pairings we recommend for you to enjoy this Pizza Day (or any other day 😉).

  1. White Wine + Margherita Pizza - The classic Margherita pizza is subtle in flavor and pairs perfectly with a tangy and floral white wine. Think of something like a Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc to enhance the flavors of the pie. It's strong enough to match the flavor of the pizza without overpowering the taste. If you prefer, a medium-bodied Sangiovese will work too.

We recommend Rocca Pinot Grigio 2020 (from Italy , Veneto, Trentino, Friuli Venezia Giulia). Click each wine to see more!

  1. Red Wine + Sausage Pizza - A robust red wine is a must for this style of pizza. This type of pizza calls for something bold like a Cabernet Sauvignon or a Chianti. This can help mellow the sausage and bring out its flavor. These ruby red wines are generally peppery, smokey and dark-berry flavored. Shiraz or syrah can enhance the flavors of anise or fennel in pizza sausage, taking a slice to new, wonderful levels.

We recommend the Domaine Gayda En Passant Rouge 2020 (from France , Languedoc-Roussillon).

  1. White Wines or Dry Rosé Wines + Veggie Pizza - Crisp, herbal content-filled white wines or dry rosé wines are the ideal vegetable pizza wine pairings. For a vegetarian pizza, a Sauvignon Blanc is the best choice.

We recommend the Delaire Graff Sauvignon Blanc 2020 (from South Africa, Western Cape).

  1. Rosé Wine + Pepperoni Pizza - Pepperoni Pizza requires medium-bodied but acidic red wines to hold up to the strong spicy and fatty flavors of Pepperoni, such as Merlot, Chianti, Baco Noir, Cabernet Franc, Barbera and Menica.

We recommend the Gianfranco Alessandria Barbera d'Alba 2020 (from Italy, Piedmont)

Pairing the perfect pizza with the right type of wine can make National Pizza Day extra special. You don’t have to be an expert to pair these two classic comfort foods - just remember that bolder pizzas need a bolder wine, and sweeter pizzas need a sweeter wine. As the famous food writer MFK Fisher once said, “First we eat, then we do everything else.”  So, raise a glass and get your pizza party started!
